2023 Sonoma Valley "Bedrock Vineyard" Zinfandel
95% Zinfandel
5% Mixed Black Varieties (Petite Sirah, Carignan, Alicante Bouschet, Mourvèdre)
After several very low-yielding years, we were thrilled to receive nearly 50% more fruit from this historic vineyard planted in 1888. Coming in on October 11th, this was the first time in our 14 years of working with Bedrock Vineyard that we’ve picked in October. The fruit is typically ready in the first half of September, even occasionally in the last week of August. Fully destemmed, 21 days on the skins, and pressed to all French oak, only 16% new. Bottled unfined and unfiltered.
Tasting Note:
Medium to medium-dark ruby-garnet. Notes of red cherry, earth, orange peel, white pepper, and Sonoma Valley garrigue can all be found in the complex and ever-evolving nose. On the palate, quite elegant and very well proportioned with a silken mouthfeel and flavors of kirsch, hot cobbles, and red licorice. Refined tannins contribute to the wine’s harmony. Given the exceptional balance, this wine will age quite well. Hold off another year and then drink beginning near the end of 2027 through 2040. (MRO - 07/15/26)
